Allergies refers to an exaggerated reaction by our immune system in response to bodily contact with certain foreign substances. These foreign substances are usually harmless. But, in a person whose body is prone to allergies, these foreign substances are recognized by the body and one part of the immune system is turned on. Allergy-producing substances are called as ‘allergens’. Examples include pollens, dust mite, molds, danders, and certain foods.

Any substance, whatever its origin, is a possible allergen. Allergens cause the production of immunoglobulin E (IgE), an antibody that all of us have in small amounts. Allergic persons, however, produce IgE in abnormally quantities. Normally, this antibody is important in protecting us from parasites, but not from other allergens.

As per Ayurveda, foods are just aliens when we ingest them. These aliens are treated by the Agni (fire) of the body to change into compatible foods for the body. When the Agni doesn’t work properly, toxins get produced and accumulation of these toxins reduces the immunity of the body and gives rise to the immunity related diseases. Allergies occur when a hypersensitive immune system reacts to a common or unusual substance.

The word allergy is derived from the Greek words “allos,” meaning different or changed and “ergos,” meaning work or action. People prone to allergies are said to be allergic or atopic. Although allergies can develop at any age, the risk of developing it is genetic. It is related to ones family history of allergy. Ayurvedic medicine has also found that eliminating allergens from the body will help alleviate symptoms associated with chronic fatigue syndrome. If an individual suffers from allergies all year long, he/she might want to consider visiting an ayurvedic practitioner. Ayurvedic medicine works on increasing the sensitivity & nervine strength of immunity of the respiratory system .

Following ayurvedic medicines, under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner, could be used by an individual who is prone to allergies:

-Medicated oil specially prepared for Nasya ‘Anu tail’ is very effective.

-For Vata & Kapha – Trikatu, basil, cloves, camphor, and coriander may be used.

-To ease Kapha aggravation, guduchi tablets may be taken along with basil, cloves, and camphor.

-For skin allergy – Neem Capsule, Neem Oil, Khadiraristam, Nimbasavam, Haridrakhandam, Agasthya rasayan.

-For Allergy of the Respiratory System – Agasthya rasayan, Nimbarajanyadi tablet, Spetilin Tablet, Septilin syrup, Kanchanar guggulu, Anu Oil.

-For healthy resistance to all airborne allergens – Agasthya rasayan, Nimbarajanyadi tablet, Spetilin Tablet, Septilin syrup, Kanchanar guggulu, Anu Oil-Cutis Oil (Vasu Pharmaceuticals), Haridra Capsules (Himalaya).

- Anti-allergy herbs include: turmeric, Picrorhiza kurroa, Tinospora Cordifolia, and Triphala.

A person can react to harmless substances such as mold, animal dander, dust, pollen and certain types of foods. This results in common symptoms such as watery and itchy eyes and nose, sneezing, coughing, sinus congestion and pressure, skin itch and headaches.

Although there are effective prescription medications to control these allergic symptoms, they do not get to the underlying causes. This is why control of the environment is essential.

Let’s first look at how a person suffering from allergies can make changes to the home environment and then review some natural remedies that work.

Environmental Control

If you suffer from allergies, keeping the home, especially the bedroom clean is very important. Why the bedroom? You sleep in it with the door closed for upwards of eight hours. You will breathing in the air in that room so it had better be somewhat clean.

A HEPA filter air cleaner placed in the bedroom will keep the air free of allergens (any substance that causes an allergic reaction). Having it running at full speed during the day (because it is noisy) and at the low setting at night. This will keep the air very clean and free from any particles in the air that can trigger allergy symptoms.

If the bedroom has carpets, they will be dust magnets. No amount of vacuuming will get rid of all the dust, dirt, dander and dust mites present in the carpets. Nevertheless, you should vacuum well weekly using either a central vacuum cleaner unit or a HEPA filter fitted vacuum cleaner. HEPA is a type of filter that traps 99.97% of all the particles larger than 0.2 micron.

If course, replacing the carpet with hardwood or laminate wood is ideal but may not be practical or cost-effective for many.

Washing the pillow cases and bed sheets in hot water weekly will kill off dust mites and get rid of dust. If possible, put the pillows and bed sheets in allergy covers.

What about natural supplements that can help?

There are many supplements and natural remedies that can be very helpful in reducing the inflammation that is associated with allergies. Fish oil is a very helpful supplement to reduce the immune system’s response to allergic substances.

Although vitamin C is best known for its use to reduce cold and flu symptoms, it also has antihistamine effects that can be helpful. Histamines are released in response to an allergic substance resulting in common allergy symptoms.

A commonly used herb to treat allergies is stinging nettle. It seems to have the ability to cut down on allergies symptoms according to some studies.

Some experts have also suggested that keeping the gut healthy by taking probiotics can go a long way towards controlling allergies.

As well, if you are considering using homeopathic remedies, there are several ingredients that might prove to be very helpful. Sambucus, Euphrasia and Allium cepa are commonly found in combination homeopathic remedies to reduce allergy symptoms.

Visit the website link below for complete details including the recommended dosage of the supplements discussed. Find out today how to manage allergies naturally without the need to use prescription medications.

So you have been diagnosed with an allergy, now what? This is a position millions of American have been in. Whether you are allergic to food, certain air elements or any number of things in between, once that allergy test comes back positive you need to start living with that allergy. There are two treatment approaches available for people with allergies: avoidance and hypo-sensitization or what is often called desensitization.

Avoidance of the agent that is causing your allergic reaction is pretty straight forward. For most people with a food allergy, this is normally the best course of action. Dependent on the allergy from dairy to gluten, there are normally substitutes that can be used in a person’s diet to avoid the allergic reaction and live a happy and healthy life. A common example of an approach like this is a person switching from cow’s milk to soy milk to address a dairy allergy.

But for many people with allergies this approach is not possible. It is extremely rare that a person is allergic to cats and absolutely nothing else. That person is probably allergic to particles in the air. Completely avoiding dusts, pollens, trees and flowers for the rest of their life is pretty close to impossible. In cases like this the treatment approach of hypo-sensitization for severe cases is a good approach. But if you only occasionally have a runny nose or watery eyes, it is best just to live with it.

Hypo-sensitization involves injecting a very small amount of the allergen into the patient. Overtime larger and larger amounts are injected until the patient is capable to tolerate exposure to the allergen with only mild or sometimes no symptoms at all.

Hypo-sensitization is an effective treatment in most cases, but there are many problems with this approach also. The patients will often have local reactions at the site of the injection of the allergen. This course of treatment for an allergy will normally require weekly injections for months and sometimes years. That is why it is only considered for people who suffer from extremely severe symptoms from their allergy. For people with mild or minimal allergic reactions an approach like this is considered unnecessary.

If you are gluten intolerant, suffer from eczema or any other allergy, there are treatment options available. If you suspect that you do suffer from an allergy, consult a physician immediately. They will then advice you on the proper course of action.

It is important you gain an understanding as to what is the cause of allergies so that you can better come up with a treatment plan. Having said that, the cause of allergies has been attributed to various factors. Your allergy symptoms start to flare up when you encounter a trigger. These triggers can include pollen, dust, pet dander, and peanuts, amongst others.

When the offending allergen enters your body, your immune system immediately thinks it is an intruder, due to your increased sensitvity. It then creates immunoglobulin E., an antibody, which produces mast cells that release histamine into the bloodstream to fight against the allergens. The histamine release is what sets into motion your different allergy symptoms.

Your allergy symptoms may include anything from watery eyes, itchy skin, sneezing to difficulties in breathing. These symptoms can range from the very mild to the severe; which is why it is essential that you determine what you are allergic to, so that you can avoid the particular allergen and/or consider treatment methods.

For many people, the cause of allergies is hereditary. So if you have a parent who has allergies, you have a greater chance of developing allergies. You may also find that you may not have the same type of allergy as your parent. What is hereditary is the increased sensitivity to allergens, rather than a specific type of allergy.

Hence, antihistamines are commonly used to treat the symptoms of allergies. They fight against the histamine reaction in your body thereby reducing your symptoms. This will then allow you to live more normally.

Some natural health doctors also say that the cause of allergies is due to a condition known as the leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut syndrome refers to the damage to the lining of the bowel that leads to increased permeability of the intestinal lining. The lining becomes inflamed and damaged. This may be due to a variety of reasons such as the overuse of antibiotics, poor diet, toxins and infection. When there is increased permeability of the intestinal lining, toxins, undigested food, waste, or other matter are allowed to pass through. Allergic symptoms then manifest due to the increased toxicity of your body.

Learning about the cause of allergies can help you with a better understanding about the reaction of your body. It is important that you look for ways to reduce the histamine response of your body as well as to avoid taking antibiotics as much as possible to prevent further damage to a leaky gut.

You may not know this but the weather can produce allergies too. The weather can cause allergies if it is usually humid outside and it can also affect an individual’s immune system. The immune system may become sensitive and weak because of the allergies in the environment. During rainy days, your home will probably acquire mold, pollen and dust mites which can add to the weakening of your immune system.

Pollen and mold are usually the allergens that have the greatest potential of affecting the immune system. As a result, these kinds of allergens cause major allergies in people.

Pollens ordinarily come from ordinary elements like trees, weeds, and grass. At spring time, people usually get their allergies from pollen. However, if you acquire an allergy during the summer, then it is probably because of the grasses that growing. During summer, the most common source of allergies is the ragweed.

Molds usually survive in moist and dark areas. Outdoor environments that contain moisture will be sure places where molds will live and thrive. Such places will be around hay, leafs, rotten logs, mulch and trees. At home, you can mostly find them in showers, around kitchen sinks, in window frames and on shower curtains and in the basement just to name a few.

Allergies that are usually caused by pollen may somehow be relieved with the help of a shower or bath before bedtime. Being clean helps you in reducing the amount of skin cells you lose through shredding. Bathing at night could also help you to breathe easier.

When it is usually windy and dry outdoors, you have to prevent yourself from going outside. During such days pollens are all over the place. This is the best time to make good use of the air conditioner inside of your home and car. Always keep the windows of your home and car closed when the air conditioner is on, to prevent the pollen from coming in. This will help you to avoid a possible allergy attack.

Molds just like pollen is all over the place. They can survive inside the home and can even survive outside the home. However, there are still some things that you can do to relieve yourself from the allergy. Avoid having houseplants inside your home or placing them outside your home. If you already have some at your home, get rid of them at once, this can do a great deal to prevent you from any kind of allergies. Plants give off oxygen that could spread pollen around faster causing allergies.

After every shower, you have to keep your tub dry by wiping it with a dry cloth or towel. You also have to do the same on your shower curtain so as not to make molds multiply. Alternatively, you could always spray the inside of your shower and curtain with a cleaner that helps to slow the growth of mold.

If you think that these are too much or find it difficult to do regularly, you can just change your shower curtain every three to six months. The walls of your bathroom should be wiped out using a mixture of bleach and water. Bleach can kill the molds so use them in cleaning your bathroom and your basement.

If you are thinking of redoing your bathroom, avoid the idea of placing carpet in your bathroom. Mold loves the carpet and will usually attach to it. Plus any carpet in your bathroom will be an ideal place for molds to thrive and it will most likely stay damp longer than you would like.

Paints can do a great thing to your walls. Be sure to use paints that stay dry and prevent walls from producing moisture. Molds usually feed on the moisture that walls give off.

Once you experience an allergy attack, taking antihistamines can provide you relief. Antihistamines can help you a lot even though they may have some side effects that are usually just mild ones. Such side effects include dryness of the mouth and tiredness. Some decongestants that come in the form of pills and in nasal spray can also provide relief.

Avoid getting over-the-counter medicines as it is much better to seek medical help from your doctor. Over-the-counter medicines sometimes produce harmful side effects. The doctor may prescribe you some nasal spray that can eliminate the tissue inflammation inside the nose so that you can breathe more easily. Always remember to go and talk to your doctor whenever you feel that there is something wrong in your body.

I used to be allergic and asthmatic. Allergy shots and allergy treatments from age 6 to age 16 made me into a spacey human pin cushion. Inhalers and medications were kept in every corner of my life. I remember going to the emergency room one Christmas Eve for adrenaline. My asthma was life-threatening at times.

I asked every Doctor I was sent to:

“Why is it dogs and cats make me sneeze and wheeze, but it doesn’t make my best friend sneeze and wheeze? What’s the difference between us?
When the experts couldn’t answer I kept asking myself that question. Even my more basic question went unanswered:

If medication gives my body what is missing, why is it my body can’t do the same?
Fortunately I was too young to listen to authority figures and entered a search for a cause, and a cure. I started to take herbs, vitamins, and anything that offered a ray of hope.

After many failed herb, vitamin, and natural experiments I got lucky….

In 1977, at the age of 19 I was introduced to a Doctor in Utah by an older friend who was interested in nutrition. This man was said to be a premier Biochemist, Herbalist and Healer. Hundreds of people followed the guy around, and although he was criticized by those wanting to discredit him I spoke with many, many people who had experienced tremendous health benefits.

When I met “Doc” he told me the following:

There are three things causing your allergies:

#1 Your Liver is overproducing histamines because it has too many toxins

#2 Your thyroid is low, and that sets the rate of the liver

#3 Your adrenal glands and lungs are weak (that was no surprise to me but until then I didn’t know what to do)

This made total sense because:

I knew about “anti-histamines” because I had taken them to stop allergic responses

One of my symptoms – hard to wake up in the morning – matched the low thyroid symptoms.

My inhaler at the time was epinephrine – an adrenaline-like substance

Within 3 months of being treated with herbs he gave me to detox my liver, and herbs/nutrients to build my lungs and support my adrenal and thyroid, I was allergy and asthma free. That was 30 years ago, and I have been allergy/asthma free ever since.

(I’ll say this to keep myself out of jail- take your medication until your doctor tells you otherwise, and/or if you decide to find a natural cure as I did. Be advised that you’ll meet alot of resistance from Doctors and even many asthmatics who believe natural cures are impossible. Sad, but true.)

Here’s The Picture:

The Liver has to process toxins and when it can’t do it’s job it stores them. If it stores them it also produces additional histamines to protect itself. If an allergen is present the brain sends a message ;”Send out a few histamines! I think there’s an invader!!” and the Liver proceeds it releases too many, and you have the allergic response – hives, asthma, sneezing, etc..

Cleanse the Liver and maybe, like me, you’ll become allergy/asthma free.

Food allergy is an unusual response to a food generated by body’s immune system. Allergies to food are caused when the immune system sets up an attack on specific proteins in certain food types.

Mechanism Of Food Allergy:
The allergens in food are proteins that are responsible for provoking an allergic reaction. They generally can withstand the heat of cooking, the acid present in the stomach, and the intestinal digestive enzymes. So, the allergens can easily survive to pass over the gastrointestinal lining, enter into the bloodstream, and reach the target organs. This results in allergic reactions all over the body. The mechanism of food allergy is associated with immune system and heredity.

Food allergy is a hypersensitivity reaction, which means an allergic reaction due to allergen is caused, when a person is exposed to that allergen previously. In the initial exposure, allergen provokes lymphocytes (particular white blood cells) to generate the IgE (immunoglobulin E) antibody, which is unique for the allergen. Then this IgE is released and gets attached to the surface of the mast cell (specific cell that present in all tissues) present in different tissues of the body (mostly on tissues of nose and throat, lungs, skin, and gastrointestinal tract). When the person eats the food next time, its allergen increases and sharpens particular IgE antibody on the surface of the mast cells and provokes the cells to release chemicals like histamine, which causes symptoms of food allergy.

Symptoms Of Food Allergy:
Food allergy symptoms appear within a few minutes to an hour after consuming food. Allergies are mostly show effect on skin, stomach and intestines, mouth, and airways.

•	Skin symptoms of allergies are hives, itchy, scaly rash called eczema, redness or flushing and swelling.
•	Digestive symptoms of allergies are stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
•	Common respiratory symptoms of allergies are sneezing, coughing, closing of the throat, runny nose and wheezing, itchy and watery eyes.
•	Life threatening reaction of food allergy is Anaphylaxis, which will affect many parts of the body simultaneously and may cause death.
•	Other symptoms of allergies are problem in breathing, fall of blood pressure and unconsciousness.

People sometimes confuse allergies due to food with food intolerance, as they both have same symptoms. Food intolerance is the inability to thoroughly break down food into digestible elements and caused due to insufficient or inadequate quantity of digestive enzymes. The symptoms of food intolerance are indigestion, loose stools, gas, burping, nervousness, and headache.

Causes of Food Allergies:
Food allergies can be caused due to many food items. Foods that cause allergies are tree nuts, fish and shellfish, peanuts, milk. Also, eggs, soy and wheat cause food allergies. These are top eight most common food allergies contributed to 90% of all the food allergies that are diagnosed today. Researchers have recognized that some people who suffer from hay fever (allergic reaction to pollen) symptoms also have an allergic reaction towards specific food items.

Treatment for Food Allergies:
•	Avoiding allergic food is usually the best option for most of the common food allergies. A person must read food labels to avoid allergic food.
•	Medications and supplements can be used to reduce food allergy symptoms.
•	Rotation diets are essential for patients who suffer from multiple allergies.
•	Vitamin C must be consumed more as it is a common anti-allergy supplement.

The diagnosis of food allergy is conducted with a complete history of the patient’s diet diary or an elimination diet. Most of the types of food allergies in adults are different from those in children. People who suffer from food allergies should identify and stop using them because usually the symptoms may be mild and not severe. But sometimes these reactions can result in devastating illness and in some instances can lead to death.

Because of the potential extreme danger that food allergies pose to the public, it is vital that people look into this matter in a more serious light. According to statistics, millions of people and probably more around the world were affected by food allergies. Furthermore, 200 people in the United States alone are reported to die yearly due to illnesses acquired from food allergies.

This statistic is astounding, that is why there is a necessity for the people not only in the United States but all over the world to be aware how allergic reactions can be deadly. In the same note, it is important that the society becomes aware how many foods prepared can actually contain some of the most foods that give allergic reactions to people.

Most common foods that people are usually allergic to include:

Nuts – include walnuts, peanuts, pecan, and other tree nuts
Shellfish and sea foods – crab, shrimp, lobster, oyster, fish and others
Dairy products – cream, milk, cheese, soya products, and others
Poultry products – Eggs, chickens, and others

The abovementioned foods are the most common ingredients being served, directly or indirectly, on the table. The worse thing about them is that ingested allergens work regardless of the amount consumed. So, just imagine if you don’t know the ingredients contained in the meal served up for you.

It is even scarier to babies who are breastfed because moms can pass these allergens through the milk. Moms must be properly educated about food allergies and foods which potentially contain allergens as they can easily pass these on to the babies who in turn may develop allergic reactions, and can be life-threatening if not immediately addressed.

The worst thing about food allergies is the fact that they are tough to diagnose. Unless a reaction has occurred, you normally would not know if you have allergies from certain food. At such time, it often becomes too late for you to even think of preventative measures as reactions are quickly coming out and are hard to determine how serious they are. The best thing that must be done in this situation is to take it with utmost care and seek medical treatment from a qualified physician.

There are a few ways on how to protect you from getting allergic reactions from food. The simplest is to avoid foods you know you are allergic to and prepare for what is worst. Meaning:

• You should have to be always aware of the food you are eating and or in what environment it was prepared.

• When in a restaurant, always ask the servers what ingredients do a certain menu consists of. If necessary, inform the people at the restaurant of the certain food you are allergic from so they would know what to prepare for your orders.

• At home, always be vigilant with the food or groceries brought and make it sure that all others in the household know what foods you should not consume because of the allergy.

• It will also help if extra care is provided when preparing food to avoid cross-contamination.

On the other hand, you still contract allergies even though you practice preventative measures to avoid them. In this case, it is important to know what to do during these times. Managing food allergic reactions is one thing that can make a difference literally between life and death.

If you or one in the household suffers from food allergy reactions, there is no better way than to consult the right physician so they can give you proper management strategies.

Allergens are everywhere but why are there people who are more prone to developing allergies and why are there people whose bodies do not seem to give a heck?

The thing is, our bodies react differently to allergens. While it is true that allergy-inducing components are present in the air we breathe, the food we eat and the water we drink in varying quantities, our bodies can somehow fight them or get defeated by them. It is basically a war between the immune system and the nasty foreign substances we dearly call “allergens”.

The difference lies in the reaction of the immune system. Normally, allergens such as pollens, food and dust are very well tolerated by our bodies. The body treats them as common substances that do not pose any harm to the system. However, for some people with so-called allergic reactions, their bodies react defensively, oftentimes producing symptoms that are identified as allergic reactions.

This is where things mess up because by nature, the body should be tolerable enough to come in contact with the so-called allergens without putting up a fight. By the way, allergens are certain types of antigens which are basically foreign substances that upset the homeostasis of the immune system.

For normal people with normal reactions to allergens, the immune system produces antibodies that are meant to combat with the foreign materials. These antibodies are, in a way, protectors of the body in protein form. They are medically known as immunoglobulins. They work by attaching themselves to the surface of the invading materials such that other immune system cells can easily destroy the allergens. There are five immunoglobulins that are found in human body namely IgA, IgD, IgG, IgM and IgE. The latter is the allergic reaction-producing immunoglobulin.

However, the case is different for those people with allergic reactions for they develop the allergy antibody called IgE in abnormally high quantities. This either develops on the first exposure or it can sensitize for several years and will only arise on succeeding exposures.

For both conditions, it is possible that there is prior exposure to allergens that have triggered the development of the IgE antibody in higher quantities. Once this happens, the immune system would produce much higher numbers of IgE which would turn out to coat immune cells that contain certain chemicals that might cause various body reactions during their explosion.

When these chemicals are released, which include histamine, inflammation in specific sites of the body would occur, the typical symptom of allergy. This is the result of the body’s exaggerated reaction to various substances. On subsequent exposures to allergens, the body will react in the same exaggerated manner. In fact, the body may become more reactive. The result is an allergic individual who cannot put up with otherwise harmful substances.

But then again, for normal individuals, the reaction would be very different. Allergens will be treated differently by the immune system and would be readily eliminated from the body. Any subsequent exposures will not be entertained by the immune system as threats.

The importance of the IgE makes sense if seen from its original, and not the altered, function. IgE are meant to protect the human body from the invasion of parasites and not normal substances such as dust, dander and mites.

Thus, reactive responses to allergens are not normal and should be treated as such.
